Speak up

以下是Alice的演讲内容 —— 如果这个孩子说的是,杀光犹太或者拉丁的话…

We realized the importance of marching up and speaking up at the event. Without preparing a speech, we wanted to make an impact.

I have been pondering: if the scenario on the ABC Kimmel show was slightly different, and somehow the 6-year-old said, “kill all black people” instead of “Chinese”.

Would Mr. Kimmel have said, “that’s an interesting idea!”?
Would ABC have aired the show?

Probably not!

If the 6-year-old said, “kill all Jews”,

Would Mr. Kimmel have said, “that’s an interesting idea!”?
Would ABC have aired the show?

Probably not!

If the 6-ytear-old said, “kill all latinos”,

Would Mr. Kimmel have said, “that’s an interesting idea!”?
Would ABC have aired the show?

Probably not!

The question is why not?

In my opinion, these out-spoken races have jumped up and down, screamed their lungs out, and made enough boisterous noises, that enough social and political sensitivity has been cultivated in this society, that Mr. Kimmel and ABC would not DARE to offend! The consequence would have been highly visible on their radar screen. They would have expected an outrageous uproar from these communities.

My question to us all is: what’s stopping us from jumping up and down, screaming our lungs out and making enough boisterous noises, so that enough social and political sensitivity could also been cultivated that no one dare to talk about “kill all Chinese” on a national TV. No one would venture to entertain such an “interesting” idea!

Dear friends, and fellow Chinese Americans, we can’t control what other people say or do. But it is completely up to us to make our thundering voice heard. If that means that we need to change our traditional cultural values on humility, modesty and the quiet resilience that have been ingrained in our blood and soul, then so be it! We must adapt to survive and thrive.

It’s the time to transform a part of us into this new noisy, rambunctious, outspoken, articulate and somewhat confrontational Chinese American or Chinese in America.

As dictated and predicted in the natural law of the universe of what goes around comes around: it’s only when we speak up, our children will speak up! It’s only when you believe that our voice matters, our children will believe theirs matter! It’s only when we take action to change today’s world, our child will take action to change their future!

In our hands holds our children’s future!

Speak up!
